"I still believe that Trump showed better than Hillary did in last night’s debate, but I concede that it wasn’t remotely enough of a performance to make up for what he lost with the disclosure of that tape.

The best the GOP can hope for out of this catastrophe is that it will prove in the long run to have been a Goldwater year: a definitive rejection of the party’s nominee, but the beginning of the nominee’s ideas starting to change the GOP mainstream. As it is, I don’t think Trump has any real ideas, only intuitions, but on the anti-globalist, nationalist front, he’s right about them. I expect that we will see more and more Republican candidates at the grassroots running on them. On the other hand, it’s hard to figure from where they will get the money, given where corporate funding is likely to go.

And, people who campaigned for Goldwater were not disgraced by his loss or their affiliation with him. That’s not going to happen this time. Nor will the Trumpsters be eager to make nice with the GOP establishment."

There's apparently big money in keeping alive a myth about 1964 and Goldwater. JFK was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963
--not even a year before the 1964 presidential election. Kennedy's Vice President, LBJ was sworn in as US president, on 11/22/1963,
a blood-spattered Jackie Kennedy beside him. With the assassination fresh in the country's mind, and LBJ already serving as president, there isn't the slightest chance in hell anyone but LBJ would be the next US president. Ignoring the context of that time is like not noticing that the small country of Israel is surrounded on all sides by seething, inhuman savages carrying the finest in US made weapons.

Also in 1964, of course, the GOP Establishment's Nelson Rockefeller did his best to destroy the Republican Party: He traveled the country warning that the Republican Party was a "danger to the nation:" "During this year, I have criss-crossed this nation...fighting to keep the Republican party of all the people-and warning of the extremist threat, its danger to the party and its danger to the nation."
