John McCain solicited illegal contribution from Russian official for his 2008 US presidential campaign. Since he'd opted for pubic financing, it was illegal for McCain to solicit a private donation. It's also illegal to solicit or accept donations from foreign nationals-Politico, Oct. 20, 2008
