Steve Zwick a carbon trading advocate, but UBS bank says Europe's CO2 trading has been 'a waste' and cost consumers $287 billion

11/23/11, "Europe's $287 billion carbon 'waste': UBS report," The Australian, by Sid Maher

"SWISS banking giant UBS says the European Union's emissions trading scheme has cost the continent's consumers $287 billion for "almost zero impact" on cutting carbon emissions, and has warned that the EU's carbon pricing market is on the verge of a crash next year.

In a damning report to clients, UBS Investment Research said that had the €210bn the European ETS had cost consumers been used in a targeted approach to replace the EU's dirtiest power plants, emissions could have been reduced by 43 per cent "instead of almost zero impact on the back of emissions trading".

Describing the EU's ETS as having "limited benefits and embarrassing consequences", the report said there was fading political support for the scheme, the price was too low to have any significant environmental impact and it had provided windfall profits to market participants,

  • paid for by electricity customers....

European carbon prices have already been under pressure as part of the market turbulence triggered by the European debt crisis. Analysts are predicting EU carbon permits may fall to a record low €8.60 this week on a "future supply glut".

UBS said sources of the oversupply of permits include the European Investment Bank, EU governments, Russia and Ukraine."......via Tom Nelson

Wind farms cause global warming, 9 year study published in Nature Climate Change, turbine rotors the cause

4/30/12, "Wind farms linked to temperature increase," ABC Brisbane, Australia

"Writing in the journal Nature Climate Change, Professor Zhou and colleagues reported a temperature increase of up to 0.72 degrees Celsius per decade at wind farm locations, compared to nearby areas.

They also found the affect to be greater at night than during the day.

The study could help researchers better understand the impact of wind farms on local environments.

After discounting the impact of surface features such as vegetation, roads, light reflection and surface structures, the researchers concluded that the temperature change was caused by air turbulence generated by the turbines' giant rotor blades.

"Turbine rotors were modifying surface-atmosphere exchanges and the transfer of energy, momentum, mass and moisture within the atmosphere," they wrote.

The findings are based on nine years of satellite data covering an area of central western Texas, where some of the world's largest wind farms are located.

The results match modelling studies showing wind farms can significantly affect local scale meteorology by increasing surface roughness, changing the stability of the atmospheric boundary layer, and enhancing turbulence in the wake generated by rotor blades."

Australia 10 yr. drought officially over says government. For Richard Black, Maurice Strong, Prince Charles, devastating news 'heading into Rio'

Wet and dry periods due to El Nino and La Nina.

4/29/12, "Australia faces the end of Big Dry," BBC, Duncan Kennedy

"Australians call it the Big Dry and, after nine parched years, it's over.

It's the drought that has afflicted large areas of this vast country and now the federal government is about to declare it officially at an end.

The final two areas to be given the all-clear are Bundarra and Eurobodalla in the south-eastern state of New South Wales.

In practical terms, it means that the last of special subsidies to farmers are being withdrawn.

It's the end of "Exceptional Circumstances", or EC, to use the bureaucratic jargon.

"The seasonal outlook is brighter than it has been for many years and the improved conditions are a welcome reprieve for farmers across Australia," said Joe Ludwig, Australia's agriculture minister.

He said the end of the drought would be a "a major milestone for agriculture in Australia".

Since 2001, the government has provided 4.5bn Australian dollars ($4.7bn, £2.9bn) in EC assistance.

That's the money handed out to struggling farmers, totalling between 400 and 600 dollars each, every fortnight.

Some farmers say the move to take away the EC assistance is premature.

The National Farmers Federation said the government's "snap decision" to cut subsidies was "baffling".

"With no areas likely to be drought-declared in the near future and with a programme to develop alternatives already under way, we ask the question of government: why the rush?" the federation's president Jock Laurie said.

Australia's current drought really took hold from 2003 and, depending on the area, has lasted on and off ever since.

But this, the driest inhabited continent, has lived with the scourge of drought throughout its entire history.

One of the first recorded was in 1803 when there were severe crop failures in New South Wales.

Another, devastating nationwide drought followed in 1902, just after Australia became a federation.

During that one, the total sheep population halved, from just over 100 million to about 50 million.

It wasn't until 1927 sheep numbers recovered.

One of the longest dry periods lasted through the Second World War, from 1937 to 1947, with eastern Australia again the worst affected.

Other bad droughts followed at an interval of about one every decade.

And the pattern has been repeated into the 21st Century.

Australia is drought-prone because of its geography and changeable rainfall patterns.

It's located in a subtropical area of the world that produces dry, sinking air which creates clear skies and little rain.

That means for most of the country, the rainfall is very low and irregular.

Another cause of drought is the El Nino weather pattern.

When there are El Nino weather conditions, Australia becomes drier than normal and the chance of rain decreases.

The succession of droughts has lead some to question the future of population growth in Australia.

The environmental organisation, Sustainable Population Australia, says Australia cannot continue to maintain its current rate of population growth without becoming overpopulated, in terms of access to water.

Their calculation is all the more remarkable, given the current size of the population in relation to the vastness of Australia.

At the moment there are just under 23 million people in a country roughly the size of the United States, which has more than 300 million inhabitants.

The population of Australia is about the same as Texas.

But, even with only 23 million people, the pressures on water supplies are intense.

You only have to follow the caustic ebbs and flows of political debate over the Murray-Darling river basin to realise just how precious and divisive a resource water is.

This vast system, with the Murray and Darling rivers at its heart, covers most of the states of New South Wales, Victoria and parts of Queensland and South Australia.

The recent publication of an official report into its future made headline news, such is its importance to literally tens of millions of people, with everyone from farmers to industrialists to indigenous Australians, laying claim to a stake in the Basin's liquid bounty.

Yet, just when it seems that Australians are doomed to live in a land lacking in water, comes news from the Bureau of Meteorology that 2011 was the third-wettest year on record and the wettest since 1970.

It's this sustained onslaught of rain over the past two years, that has, in part, enabled the government to declare the end to droughts, even if, at the same time, it has also had to deal with the catastrophic flooding that has accompanied the deluge.

The voluminous precipitation of recent times has been largely due to the influence of La Nina, the contrary cousin of El Nino.

La Nina produced slightly warmer conditions in the western Pacific, creating more moist air, especially over the populated eastern states.

But, as with everything Australian, that is not the complete picture, as while the East has been swamped with rain and cool conditions, out West temperatures soared beyond 49 degrees.

That's just the way it is here, a people of moderation existing in a land of climatic extremes."...

US media censored news that one of their heroes recanted his CO2 endangerment views both scientifically and observationally

.
Journos and their bosses censor themselves, keep quiet about Lovelock, perhaps fear financial consequences from the 'too big to fail' CO2 industry. The owner of Bloomberg news for example is heavily invested in the CO2 endangerment industry.

4/27/12, "Lawrence Solomon: Censored science," Lawrence Solomon, Financial Post

"True to form, the overwhelming majority of press outlets failed to report the juiciest global-warming gossip of the week — a change of heart on the issue by one of the world’s most celebrated environmentalists. Also true to form, the press failed to report the most profound science story of the week — a startling theory that not only absolves humans of blame in global warming but sheds light on another taboo subject: shortcomings in Darwin’s theory of evolution....

Perhaps these unskeptical journalists don’t question scientists out of a belief that scientists’ pronouncements are free of the self-interest that taints politicians or corporations.... Or perhaps these journalists fear being subjected to ridicule if they buck politically correct views. Whatever the reasons for journalistic deference to dogma in science, the victim is the information-consuming public, which at best is kept in the dark, at worst is duped.

Take the juicy global-warming story I referred to. Several years ago, environmentalist James Lovelock made headlines when he announced that global warming would end the world as we know it — he predicted that “billions of us will die and the few breeding pairs of people that survive will be in the Arctic where the climate remains tolerable.” Google searches associating his name with global warming and climate change now exceed one million hits, and understandably so, given his reputation. Lovelock has infused environmental thought for decades through best-selling books describing Earth as a living organism — Lovelock is the one who coined the Gaia concept. Among many other honours heaped on Lovelock, Time magazine featured him in a series on Heroes of the Environment.

So, why, when Lovelock this week recanted his past views on global warming as being “alarmist,” did virtually every major news outlet on the planet ignore his change of heart? It wasn’t because he minced his words.

The problem is we don’t know what the climate is doing. We thought we knew 20 years ago,” he admitted, adding that temperatures haven’t increased as expected over the last 12 years. “There’s nothing much really happening yet. We were supposed to be halfway toward a frying world now.”

What else has the press, in its wisdom, decided to keep from the public in recent days? One eye-opener is the advance of ice in both the Arctic and the Antarctic — both are now at or above average levels. Another is an announcement by researchers at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan and the Riken research foundation that the world may be heading into a prolonged period of global cooling — the Japanese study compared sunspot activity today with sunspots that preceded the Little Ice Age in the 17th century to find close similarities.

Had questioning of global warming not been taboo to most journalists, these stories would have doubtless merited ink and air time, not least because they tell a fresh story. Because the subject is taboo, the press censors itself.

The freshest story of all this week, which by rights should have rated stellar coverage, involved a powerful refutation of Darwin’s theory of evolution and its mechanism, natural selection. “Natural selection acts only by taking advantage of slight successive variations; she can never take a great and sudden leap, but must advance by short and sure, though slow steps,” Darwin wrote. Now, suggests a study published by the U.K.’s Royal Astronomical Society, life on Earth did not evolve smoothly at all: To the contrary, the planet owes its diversity to intense periods of productivity interspersed with immense periods of stagnancy. The mechanism for this evolving theory? Climate change on Earth, driven by galactic cosmic rays originating from exploding supernovas — the final act of stars.

This study, Evidence of nearby supernovae affecting life on Earth, does have a problem, although it convincingly correlates the development of life on Earth with the explosion of nearby stars over the past 510 million years. The problem is its author, Henrik Svensmark, a professor of physics at the Center for Sun-Climate Research at the Danish Space Research Institute, who is reviled in the global warming science establishment for studies showing that the Sun and cosmic rays, not man, drives the current climate on Earth.

Reporters on the global-warming beat and their editors have long ignored if not disparaged Svensmark. His latest study, which shows cosmic rays to have also driven the ancient climate, provides most journalists with reason enough to continue to ignore him, even though his study has been published by the world’s oldest and one of its most illustrious astronomical societies."...

Maurice Strong, Senior Adviser to 2012 Rio+20 Summit gets award for influencing world 'sustainable' agenda in Abu Dhabi

Update, 6/21/12, "The Beijing office of the United Nations Development Program has paid Strong's way, with a $13,000 round-trip air ticket from Beijing to New York to Rio and back. His hotels and living expenses are also being picked up, in what amounts to a three-week Rio + 20 junket....Using a UNEP-created news agency as the vehicle for an article by a former UNEP executive director to further the cause of greater global sway for UNEP is the kind of inventive but also self-aggrandizing public relations thinking that Strong has long brought to the U.N., and that played no small part in his long ascent to prominence."...

4/29/12, "World Green Tourism Award," MauriceStrong.net

"Maurice Strong, Senior Advisor to the 2012 Rio+20 Summit, was named as the first recipient of the inaugural World Green Tourism Award in recognition of his pivotal role in shaping the global sustainable development agenda, and in recognising the potential of Travel & Tourism to make a contribution to mainstream green growth transformation.

Maurice Strong received the award at the World Green Tourism conference and exhibition, which took place at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from December 5-7, where he was invited to deliver the valedictory address.

Sponsored by Etihad Airways in partnership with the International Council of Tourism Partners (ICTP), the award recognises Strong’s outstanding efforts to encourage thought leadership and action for green initiatives in travel and tourism.

Among his many public and private sector appointments, Strong has served as Secretary General of the 1972 Stockholm Environment Conference, and as the First Head of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). In 1992, he was Secretary General of the Rio Earth Summit, the United Nations conference on environment and development.

During the Rio Conference, he proposed an “Agenda 21 for Travel & Tourism.” This became the basic framework for global programmes by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) and UNWTO to start the development of a travel and tourism sector that was environmentally, socially, and culturally sustainable.

Strong was selected by a distinguished panel of judges chaired by Professor Geoffrey Lipman, President of ICTP along with Erica Harms, Global Sustainable Tourism Council; Laila Yousef Al Hassan, Manager of Communications and Marketing, Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD); Vijay Poonoosamy, VP International & Public Affairs, Etihad Airways; and Hisham Zaazou, Senior Assistant Minister of Tourism Egypt.

“Throughout his distinguished career as a public servant and entrepreneur, Maurice Strong has consistently identified the travel and tourism industry as a key sector in sustainable development,” said Lipman. “He understands the fact that the environment is at the core of travel and tourism’s product and thus it must be at the core of its strategy, policy and action. He continues to do so, half a century on and is an inspiration to all of us.”

Lipman added: “The World Green Tourism Award was launched this year to serve as an inspiration to the travel and tourism sector as it shifts to a green growth paradigm. Delivering the inaugural award at the World Green Tourism Conference in Abu Dhabi is a significant milestone, given that the event is the leading global focal point on sustainable travel and tourism. With the Durban Climate meeting underway and next year’s Rio + 20 in sight, the timing of the award is also highly relevant.”

Organised by Streamline Marketing Group, World Green Tourism, the first commercial conference and exhibition specifically for the sustainable tourism sector, was hosted by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) and the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi. It was held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, ADTA’s Chairman.

"Green Guilt. People buying into the ‘green’ fad simply want to feel better about themselves, regardless of whether their actions actually do any good. "UniCredit SpA’s Carbon Solutions Team advised clients to check their carbon accounts under the European Union’s cap-and-trade program as Germany said 250,000 permits were “improperly transferred” in a hackers’ attack.

National emission registries in EU countries including Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland temporarily disabled transactions in carbon-dioxide allowances last week after hackers sought to acquire confidential information from emitters in the EU trading system, according to their Web sites.

There was a cyber-attack, what we call phishing, and it was a message inviting people to provide their passwords and some users did respond,” said Barbara Helfferich, a spokeswoman for the European Commission. “Illegal transactions may have taken place in Germany and the Czech Republic.”

In Germany, Europe’s biggest polluter, seven of about 2,000 users gave the hackers access to their accounts, the Federal Environment Agency said today in a statement. “Approximately 250,000 allowances, with a value of about 12 euros ($16.70) each, have been improperly transferred,” it said.

The country’s registry, which shut on Jan. 29 because of the attack, will probably resume normal operations tomorrow, the agency said.

No one at the Czech registry was available to comment. ...

The EU carbon-trading program, the world’s largest, includes about 11,000 factories and power plants. Companies that emit more than their cap must buy additional permits, while those that cut emissions more than required can sell their surplus.

National registries in the program hold records on emission certificates held by participants. They’re linked with the EU’s central registry, the Community Independent Transaction Log, and with the United Nations’ central registry, the International Transaction Log.

The secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change said it has been informed of nine “fraudulent transactions” involving theft of passwords belonging to participants in the EU program. Software for national registries hasn’t been compromised, the UNFCCC said today in a statement.

“Many national registries have already confirmed that they have taken appropriate security measures and that access to their system is now secured,” it said. “The UNFCCC secretariat is collaborating closely with the remaining national registries to ensure that access to their systems is secured.”

In the meantime, those registries have been disconnected from the International Transaction Log, it said. The ITL, which validates and records all transactions of emission units under the Kyoto Protocol, hasn’t been subject to interference and is “fully secure and operational,” the UNFCCC said."

5/20/2009, "The Green Bubble," The New Republic, Nordhaus and Shellenberger

"Sometime after the release of An Inconvenient Truth in 2006, environmentalism crossed from political movement to cultural moment. Fortune 500 companies pledged to go carbon neutral. Seemingly every magazine in the country, including

Paris dimmed the lights on the Eiffel Tower. Solar investments became hot, even for oil companies. Evangelical ministers preached the gospel of "creation care." Even archconservative Newt Gingrich published a book demanding action on global warming.

Green had moved beyond politics....

"While utopianism has a bright side--it is a way of imagining a better world--it also has a dark side characterized by escapism and a disengagement from reality that marks all bubbles, green or financial.

Whether or not environmental leaders are able to recalibrate their politics for a post-bubble moment, all of us would do well to be suspicious of revulsion at modern life and our longing to transcend it. The low-grade dissatisfaction that almost all of us have felt is not a reason to forsake our modern lives but rather an inescapable consequence of the extraordinary choices, opportunities, and security that envelop us--and of the self-awareness and individualized identities that modernity itself makes possible. As such, the contradictions that drive our dissatisfaction and desire for transcendence are irresolvable. And this we should celebrate."

U. of Arizona climate profiteer says 2011 Arizona fire caused by 2 campers was actually caused by global warming requiring military deployment

4/22/12, "Defense Dept. on front lines of climate-change issue," ArizonaCentral.com, Opinion, by Rafe Sagarin
---------------------------------

'Climate change' had nothing to do with the largest fire in Arizona history. It was an untended campfire.

8/24/11, "Feds charge 2 in devastating Wallow fire," AP, East Valley Tribune

"Federal charges have been filed against two cousins accused of accidentally causing the largest forest fire in Arizona's history by leaving a campfire unattended.

The U.S. attorney's office on Wednesday announced the charges against Caleb Joshua Malboeuf, 26, of Benson and David Wayne Malboeuf, 24, of Tucson.

The U.S. Forest Service said its investigators determined the men were camping in the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest when the fire began there May 29.

The agency said the two were out hiking when their campfire spread outside its fire ring in high winds....

The men each face five counts, including leaving a fire unattended and failing to maintain control of a fire that damaged a National Forest System....

Winds whipped the Wallow fire as it burned more than

538,000 acres in eastern Arizona and parts of western New Mexico, destroying 32 homes, four commercial structures and 36 outbuildings....

Monsoon rains eventually put out the flames."...

-----------------------------------

The fire came close to the U.S. Army’s Fort Huachuca but not because of excess CO2 from US automobiles or light bulbs as University of Arizona climate profiteer Sagarin suggests. Nor is action by "the international community" called for in US campfire matters. Arizona Republic op-ed author Sagarin says the 2011 fire came 'up to the doorstep' of the US military and convinced them that global warming exists, is a national security threat, requires beefing up forces in Arizona, and that they need training in 'climate change' from persons at the University of Arizona funded by the US taxpayer. US taxpayer dollars for this edition of the climate Ponzi scheme via the US Dept. of Defense.

4/22/12, "Defense Dept. on front lines of climate-change issue," ArizonaCentral.com, Opinion, by Rafe Sagarin

"While the international community repeatedly stalls on taking meaningful action about climate change, there is one internationally focused organization that isn't waiting around -- the U.S. Department of Defense.

The generals and admirals there already see how climate change is affecting their operations and their strategic planning. ...

The Southwest region of the U.S. in particular is a critical zone for Defense Department readiness....

This region faces a wide range of likely interacting threats from climate change...increased severity of droughts and floods, radically altered fire regimes...that make it particularly important to train Defense Department managers on how to prepare for and adapt to the changing operational environment.

  • The department got a preview of this

in summer 2011 when Arizona's Monument Fire burned right up to the doorstep of the Army's Fort Huachuca. In short, the Southwest presents an intensified suite of climate-change impacts that Defense Department facilities are likely to experience.

Researchers from a wide range of fields at the University of Arizona -- from computer climate modeling and fire ecology to hydrology and social sciences -- have recently been selected by the Defense Department to help managers at Southwestern Defense facilities understand the risks they face with a changing climate and learn how to adapt to these risks."...

His books, "Natural Security"... and "Learning From the Octopus"... outline in full the multidisciplinary development of the linkages between biological evolution, adaptation and security."

Another citation that 2011 fire near Army Fort Huachuca was "human caused."

June 16, 2011, "Monument Fire – 40 Homes Destroyed; Army Post in Pre-Evacuation Mode," Firefighter blog

"The Monument Fire is burning in Cochise County near Sierra Vista Arizona, home to the U.S. Army’s Fort Huachuca. The 10,000 acre wind driven blaze has already destroyed 40 homes and 10 buildings described as “other”....

This human caused fire started 6/12, orginating 4 miles east of Hereford, AZ."

----------------------------------------

Ed. note: People in the military are taught to do one thing, take orders without comment. Their job is to carry out Obama's orders. If people at U. of Arizona said global warming did not exist they would be out millions in free money.
