Skiing restarts in Scotland with April snows, good news for skiers after warm Feb. and March

4/19/12, "Skiing restarts in Scotland," planetski.eu/news

"The latest cold weather has refreshed slopes with new snow allowing three of Scotland's five mountain ski areas to open, or consider opening, for business.

CairnGorm has benefited most from the new snow, while Glencoe Mountain and Nevis Range hope to open later in the week, subject to demand and further snowfall.

Following three good winters and a promising start to 2011-12 last autumn Scottish ski areas were first battered by strong winds and storms at te strat of the seaosn.

Then they suffered from near record high temperatures in February and then absolute record high temperatures in March which closed centres early.

Now snow has returned.

"Although to have such cold and snowy weather at lower altitudes is quite unusual at this time of year, the Scottish mountains normally have snow through April and into May, particularly at the higher ski areas," said the chair of Ski-Scotland, Heather Negus.

"Of course, this year's balmy spring did reduce the snow cover, but April's snow showers are good news for everyone who wants to get back on their boards or skis.""...
