East 80s Manhattan residents chat about shutdown life on neighborhood patch.com website

Residents of Manhattan’s Upper East Side chat about shutdown living on neighborhood website:

Upper East Side Neighbor Posts,” patch.com

For example, there’s a new ritual centered at 87th and York every evening at 7pm. An East 80s neighbor explains that cheering and banging on pots every night at 7pm is to express thanks to the many local workers who are keeping the rest of us alive:

What just happened with the loud crowd near 87th & York on the UES [Upper East Side]?”

Clap and Cheer at 7 p.m. every night to show appreciation for those who are keeping us alive!

The joyous noise people on the Upper East Side and in other neighborhoods heard this evening was New Yorker’s adopting the wonderful ritual that originated in Italy and now takes place worldwide.

At 7 p.m. every evening people at home and on the street cheer, clap, bang on fences and fire escapes and whistle for 2 minutes to let those on the Front Lines (doctors, nurses, firefighters, police, sanitation, transit, postal and pharmacy workers) and our Everyday Heroes (grocery store employees, laundromat workers, delivery people) know how grateful we are for what they’re doing.

I opened my window, clapped and repeatedly yelled out Bravo as loud as I could, and it was really uplifting to join those around me in this heartfelt expression of gratitude.

Our support is appreciated and IS being heard – and the media is watching and broadcasting what we’re doing.

I hope more will join every evening at 7 p.m.. It’s easy, safe and important – and the least we can do to to show our appreciation.”
