At NATO meeting US admits its forces have no mandate to be in Syria as Germany and France want to invade northeast Syria-Voltaire net

“The Atlantic Council [NATO] met at ministerial level on 24 and 25 October 2019 at NATO Headquarters in Brussels. The meeting led to fierce clashes between Germany, Benelux and France on the one hand, and the United States and Turkey on the other. 

The former Warsaw Pact states, anxious not to lower their guard over Russia, tried to calm the game. 

Unlike the 1966 debates, when France refused to have its army commanded by a senior US officer and withdrew from Integrated Command, the conflict is not about the independence of Alliance members from in the USA, but on the continuation of the Alliance itself. 

Germany, Benelux and France have demanded a military intervention in North-East Syria, both against Syrian and Turkish forces (NATO members), in support of YPG Kurdish forces. On the contrary, the United States and Turkey argued that the US forces did not have a mandate to be in Syria and that the Turkish forces were legally acting within the framework of the droit de suite on terrorism.”…
