3/4/16, "Carr: Donald Trump should quit debates while ahead," Boston Herald, Howie Carr
"About halfway through last night’s (Thurs.) debate, Megyn Kelly played some
videotape of Donald Trump and then asked him, in effect, “Aren’t you
just a liar and a flip-flopper?”
Then it was Sen. Marco Rubio’s turn to answer a question. He was asked, basically, “Are you for or against clean water?”
That was last night’s debate in a nutshell.
Six-on-one is RINO fun, although I guess you could say that Sen. Ted
Cruz is a real Republican and Gov. John Kasich begged off as a
conscientious objector — “I’m not biting,” he told Chris Wallace near
the end.
Still, it was at least four-on-one. They not only used
video against Trump, but charts, to put the knock on his budget
proposals. Imagine if Sen. Bernie Sanders had to explain his budget, or
Hillary Clinton was confronted with videotape of her ever-changing
stories about what she calls the FBI’s “security review,” and what the
FBI director calls an “investigation.”
Wouldn’t happen. Ever. And
she’s blowing off the Fox “town hall” with Sanders on primary election
eve in Detroit on Monday night. “Scheduling conflict,” wouldn’t you know
it.
If he’s not crazy, last night was Donald Trump’s final
Republican debate. In fact, the debate in Houston last week probably
should have been his last one — why give the pretenders a chance to
knock his crown off, especially after sweeping Super Tuesday?
I
mean, did Rubio take even a token shot at Cruz, or vice versa? All the
questions they got were mere afterthoughts. It was all Trump, all the
time. He looked shaky. It seemed smart to make a detour to Portland
yesterday, but by 11 last night, he looked beat. Maybe he would have
been better served if he’d taken a nap instead of delivering a
stemwinder.
Especially when Fox continued to come after him even
when the debate was over. Bill O’Reilly, at 6’5”, interviews Trump,
6’3”, as they’re standing up, side by side. Next to be interviewed is
Little Marco, at 5’8” (maybe), but now he and O’Reilly are both sitting
down. So much for the rumors about Fox ditching Sen. Amnesty as its
fair-haired boy.
Tomorrow Trump most likely cleans up in the four
primaries and caucuses. Little Marco has already canceled his
appearances today in Louisiana and Kentucky. If Florida had an Alamo,
he’d be making his last stand there, like Cruz last week in San Antonio.
Then Trump sweeps Michigan on Tuesday. What’s left to prove?
Better
for Trump to let the GOPe fulminate and sputter against him like Mitt
Romney did yesterday. Mitt attacks Trump for his bankruptcies on the day
that one of Bain Capital’s former crown jewels, the Sports Authority,
files for Chapter 11. Mitt rages against his proposed Muslim ban on the
very day that an Egyptian Muslim in flight school — stop me if you’ve
heard this one before — is arrested for posting on Facebook that he’s
going to murder Trump.
These guys can’t get out of their own way,
and not just political eunuchs, to use Larry Kudlow’s description of
Mitt. Don’t they understand? If you’re running as the anti-establishment
candidate, being blasted by the establishment is a boost, not a knock.
He
got out of the Fox Theater alive last night, but sooner or later,
everybody’s luck runs out. Sometimes discretion is the better part of
valor. This is one of those times."

Comment: Trump most certainly should not have appeared in additional lynch mob "debates" after Houston. By continuing, he's lost his entire persona, that of being a great deal maker and leader.
