Toronto can no longer handle influx of refugee claimants says Mayor. 2017-18 costs $64.5 million and counting. Quebec already said it can no longer accept refugees crossing from US-Toronto Star

6/26/18, "Toronto can’t handle influx of refugee claimants, [Mayor] Tory tells Ottawa," The Star, David Rider, Jennifer Pagliaro

"In an urgent letter, Mayor John Tory is telling the federal government that Toronto can no longer handle the influx of refugee claimants and will no longer do so without emergency financial help from senior governments.

In the letter, obtained by the Star on Monday, Tory states that Toronto welcomes all newcomers “but we need the appropriate support and leadership of both Ontario and Canada,” and that the city scrambling to find emergency shelter for each new wave of arrivals is not sustainable.

“What’s needed is proper housing and proper supports, something the city cannot provide on its own,” the letter states.

Council will consider a report from city staff at a meeting that begins Tuesday.

The pressing problem saw the city begin to house refugee claimants in college dormitories starting in May. But those spaces are available only until the beginning of August. At that time, the city has no plan for how to house 800 people currently in those temporary spaces.

Tory’s letter says continuing to house them would require closing multiple community centres and cancelling public programs
.
That, Tory wrote, is “a step the city is not prepared to take.”

The blunt letter adds that after a recent announcement of $11 million from the federal government to help Ontario with housing, “no details about how or where this funding will be used have been made available.”

The city says the direct costs of housing refugee claimants in 2017 and projected costs for 2018 are $64.5 million and counting.

Tory writes that Toronto has a long history of welcoming newcomers and supports the federal refugee program, “but responsibility for these populations does not end at the border, and we simply can no longer contend with their housing needs alone.”

Tory concludes by offering to have city staff arrange for federal officials to visit hotel or dormitory sites Toronto is using to temporarily house refugees and asylum seekers, so they can see first-hand the pressure on the system.

According to updated numbers from the city that are current to mid-June, there are nearly 3,200 refugee claimants in the shelter system. Most are housed in motels rented by the city. There are currently no rooms available.

It is also mostly families who are occupying the dorms at Humber and Centennial colleges, which are available until Aug. 9.

According to a briefing note by city staff, there were only 42 rooms available for families at either college as of mid-June. Those family spaces are expected to be full before August. There were 231 rooms available for singles.

The city’s shelter system has 6,806 beds and has consistently been operating at a nightly capacity of 95 per cent, with family occupancy at 100 per cent. The city today relies on a number of 24-7 respite centres and drop-ins to house those who are homeless.

Despite warming temperatures, those services also remain stretched.

A list of 87 families waiting for shelter beds are mostly refugee claimants, says the city staff report. Seven of those families are currently being housed in the dining rooms or offices of shelters amid the capacity crisis.

In April, as the Quebec government announced it would no longer be housing refugees crossing from the United States into the province due to its own capacity issues, Tory called on the federal and provincial governments to help with the costs of housing and also look for spaces outside the city’s borders.

Quebec’s government, the city says, is currently projecting daily arrivals of 400 refugees, meaning the current temporary spaces in Toronto will soon be full.

“Although an exhaustive search for additional shelter capacity is being pursued with federal and provincial colleagues, still no appropriate sites for additional shelter space for refugee/asylum claimants have been identified,” a city report to be tabled at council reads."

Mockery of US taxpayers continues on global stage. US taxpayer employee Strzok is told by FBI lawyers--who are also employees of US taxpayers but act as if FBI were a private company-not to answer many questions posed by Congressional Oversight Committee--also employees of US taxpayers. "Suffice to say it’s not a good look when lawyers representing the FBI are telling the central witness within a political conspiracy involving the FBI not to answer questions from congressional oversight.

House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte tells Martha MacCallum that FBI lawyers are instructing FBI Agent Peter Strzok not to answer questions from congress about the nature of his involvement within a DOJ/FBI conspiracy to stop a political candidate; and later to overthrow a presidency.

Additionally Chairman Goodlatte states the answers agent Strzok did give about his text messages was “not believable”.

*Note* at 9:00pm EDT the deposition is ongoing. They shifted into a classified setting at approximately 7:00pm. The non-classified deposition transcript is something I am very much looking forward to reading. Hopefully it will be released soon."

So, people started lining up early to make sure they got in.

Many waited outside all day, some overnight.

About 40 people were in line by 7:00 a.m., 12 hours before the President was scheduled to speak.

Many brought chairs and coolers full of snacks, planning to make a day out of it.

Obama and Hillary didn't 'have a heart' for Honduras. Zelaya tried to raise slave wages there but that enraged big business which got rid of him. Obama and Hillary backed business interests keeping Honduras wages at slave level-Huffington Post, 9/2009...Obama and Hillary increased Honduras misery by failing to support Zelaya-Consortium News, Joseph Nevins, 10/31/2016

9/7/2009, "The Minimum Wage and the Coup in Honduras," Huffington Post, Robert Naiman, updated 5/25/2011

"The coup in Honduras--and the at best grudging and vacillating support in Washington for the restoration of President Zelaya--has thrown into stark relief a fundamental fault line in Latin America and a moral black hole in U.S. policy toward the region. What is the minimum wage which a worker shall be paid for a day's labor?...The Washington Post noted in mid-July [2009], "To many poor Hondurans, deposed president Manuel “Mel” Zelaya was a trailblazing ally who scrapped school tuitions, raised the minimum wage and took on big business."

----------------

6/21/18, "How US Policy in Honduras Set the Stage for Today’s Mass Migration," Consortium News, Joseph Nevins (Article originally published on 10/31/2016)

"U.S. policy in Honduras, particularly during the Obama administration, is directly responsible for part of the immigration crisis now gripping the U.S., argues Joseph Nevins."

"Post coup Honduras"

"The 2009 coup, more than any other development, explains the increase in Honduran migration across the southern U.S. border in the last few years. The Obama administration played an important role in these developments. Although it officially decried Zelaya’s ouster, it equivocated on whether or not it constituted a coup, which would have required the U.S. to stop sending most aid to the country.

Then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in particular, sent conflicting messages, and worked to ensure that Zelaya did not return to power. This was contrary to the wishes of the Organization of American States, the leading hemispheric political forum composed of the 35 member-countries of the Americas, including the Caribbean. Several months after the coup, [Mrs.] Clinton supported a highly questionable election aimed at legitimating the post-coup government.

Strong military ties between the U.S. and Honduras persist: several hundred U.S. troops are stationed at Soto Cano Air Base (formerly Palmerola) in the name of fighting the drug war and providing humanitarian aid.

Since the coupwrites historian Dana Frank, “a series of corrupt administrations has unleashed open criminal control of Honduras, from top to bottom of the government.”

Organized crime, drug traffickers and the country’s police heavily overlap. Impunity reigns in a country with frequent politically-motivated killings. It is the world’s most dangerous country for environmental activists, according to Global Witness, an international nongovernmental organization.

Although its once sky-high murder rate has declined, the continuing exodus of many youth demonstrates that violent gangs still plague urban neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, post-coup governments have intensified an increasingly unregulated, “free market” form of capitalism that makes life unworkable for many. Government spending on health and education, for example, has declined in Honduras. Meanwhile, the country’s poverty rate has risen markedly. These contribute to the growing pressures that push many people to migrate, raising ethical questions about the responsibility of the United States toward those now fleeing from the ravages U.S. policy has helped to produce."

"This article was originally published on Oct. 31, 2016 on The Conversation." "Joseph Nevins received his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of California, Los Angeles. His research interests include socioterritorial boundaries and mobility, violence and inequality, and political ecology; he has conducted research in East Timor, Mexico and the United States-Mexico border region."

.................................

Comment: The US enforces global slave wages. Slave wages guarantee masses of people will continually flee to the US. In turn, this ensures an endless flow of cheap labor to the US. The entire US political class is paid to keep this going. If wages were allowed to rise in Honduras and other slave wage countries, masses of people wouldn't leave. The US would then be starved of docile, cheap labor.

Mike, you didn't run in 2016 because polls showed you had no chance. Parasite and failed former NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg polled distant third in 2016, would've taken more from Bernie Sanders than Trump-Wall St. Journal Poll

March 1, 2011, "The Bloomberg Bubble Bursts" Commentary, Fred Siegel "No Labels? No accomplishments, actually, for New York’s mayor."...Bloomberg "has now officially spent more of his own money in the pursuit of public office than any other individual in United States history.”...NY Times, 11/27/2009  ..................

3/7/2016, "Michael Bloomberg decides against run for president," CNN Money, Dylan Byers

"Bloomberg had spent months preparing for a potential candidacy, fearing that the two parties might nominate staunchly partisan figures like Trump or Ted Cruz on the right and Bernie Sanders on the left.

Bloomberg had brought on dozens of advisers and campaign staff, conducted internal polling in nearly two-dozen states, opened offices in Texas and North Carolina and created a campaign website and television ads, one of which he released to The New York Times. Bloomberg's advisers had also started vetting former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mike Mullen as a possible running mate.

While speculation about Bloomberg's entry into the race was a favorite topic of New York and Washington's chattering classes, his candidacy was always viewed as a long shot. Even in a Trump-vs.-Sanders general election, Bloomberg still polled a distant-third with just 16% support, according to a recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll."...

Then NYC Mayor Bloomberg’s personal fleet of private planes  made 981 trips from 2007-2010. Even if US CO2 danger existed, Bloomberg would still be an illegitimate advocate:

2/14/2011,Flight records uncover elusive Mayor’s tracks,” WSJ, Maremont, McGinty, Saul

“Clues to his travels can be found in flight records of Mr. Bloomberg’s fleet of private planes, operated by his private financial-information company, Bloomberg LP, and also used by the mayor.

The planes flew to Bermuda, where Mr. Bloomberg owns a home, 16 times last year and 54 times in all from 2007 through 2010, according to Federal Aviation Administration records reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. On 41 trips, the aircraft left New York and spent all or part of the weekend in Bermuda. One overnight trip there coincided with the December blizzard, according to flight records.

The records also show that the Bloomberg fleet has been the single largest user of scarce slots allocated to private aircraft at La Guardia airport. The flights continued apace even after the mayor two years ago called for curbs on small commercial planes at La Guardia and other area airports to reduce congestion.

The FAA records don’t show the names of passengers, so it can’t be determined if Mr. Bloomberg was on board any particular flight. The mayor’s public schedule shows he couldn’t have been on six of the 54 flights to Bermuda. The mayor’s aides declined to comment on the other Bermuda trips….

A billionaire, Mr. Bloomberg also owns vacation homes in London and Vail, Colo., and enjoys playing golf in various locales….An entity named Bloomberg Services LLC currently operates at least four aircraft, FAA records show, and it ended the lease on a fifth last June. The aircraft also are used by Bloomberg LP executives, and by the mayor’s relatives and guests. Aides have said the cost of Mr. Bloomberg’s travel aboard his company’s planes, even for city business, is borne by the mayor, not by taxpayers. Bloomberg LP declined comment.

Given the size of the Bloomberg Services fleet, the mayor undoubtedly wasn’t on board the majority of its flights over the past four years. Frequent destinations included Boston, London, and Washington—all home to many Bloomberg LP clients—and spots such as Raleigh-Durham, N.C., that the mayor isn’t know to often visit….

Bloomberg Services planes flew to another resort, the Bahamas, 14 times from New York-area airports between 2007 and 2010. The weekend before the December blizzard, for instance, a Falcon 900 took off from La Guardia for the Bahamas at 5:21 pm on Friday, Dec. 17, FAA records show. It arrived back in New York at 8:20 pm that Sunday.

Twice last April, Bloomberg Services jets left La Guardia for the Bahamas on Thursday evenings and returned on Sunday evenings.
Another frequent destination was West Palm Beach, Fla. One of the mayor’s daughters has a house near Palm Beach where she rides horses. Mr. Bloomberg’s aides declined to comment on any of the flights between New York airports and the Bahamas or West Palm Beach….

In August 2008, Mayor Bloomberg decried “chronic flight delays” at New York area airports, and threw his support behind a Bush Administration slot-auction proposal. “The largest culprit of delays today is the over-scheduling of small airplanes by airlines,” he wrote to the U.S. Secretary of Transportation.

The auction proposal was never implemented, and a spokeswoman said the FAA no longer supports it. In August 2008, the FAA further reduced the number of takeoff or landing slots for general aviation at La Guardia, from six movements per hour to three.

The largest single user of these scarce slots has been Bloomberg Services, FAA data show. Bloomberg planes departed or landed 853 times between August 2008 and the end of 2010. That is 8% of all general aviation movements at La Guardia during that period, but a tiny portion of all flights at the airport, which averages close to 1,000 daily aircraft movements.

Mr. Loeser declined to comment on any conflict between Mr. Bloomberg’s public stance on airport congestion and the number of Bloomberg Services flights at La Guardia.“
